Goldie was indeed one-of-a-kind. Her quest to be a policewoman was one of the stories I used in my just-published biography of her, called The Last of the Wild West Cowgirls, A True Story.

Her maiden name was Goldie Griffith, but she used a number of stage names, including Griffin. She was one of the first female professional athletes and began her career as a boxer, fencer and wrestler. She then became a cowgirl and rode with the famous 101 show and with Buffalo Bill's Wild West. She was with Buffalo Bill when he went broke in Denver. She married twice, and she tried to kill her first husband when she found out that he was wanted for murder in Texas and that he was already married. After she left cowgirling, she ranched in the mountains of Colorado and ran a few restaurants.

You can read more about her at lastwildwestcowgirl.com, and the book (with more than 120 historic photos) is available on Amazon or Barnes & Noble.

@EB - Hey, glad they're hitting the spot! To tell you the truth, writing about San Francisco hasn't really changed that much ... the map I've always referred to the most lies in my own head. That (plus GoogleMaps!) makes strolling around my virtual city a breeze.

@Robby - I was just contacted by a police historian who told me he'd done a complete genealogy on Goldie, but failed to mention what had happened to her! I wrote and asked him to leave a comment about her here at the blog, so let's hope ...

Damn, I reallyyyy want to know if Miss Goldie ever made it as the first female cop. She sure sounds gutsy enough for the job, even in those times.

These really are great Richard. What's it like writing about the city from a distance?
