@ Darren: I can't find my notes! I seem to recall that there were multiple sources, but a quick look through my own small library shows that the sources there, at least, were dependent on Asbury. I may have found sources at the San Francisco History Center, but I just can't recall. Sorry about that ...

Hi there. Just wondering what your sources are other than Asbury for the Little Pete story?

Thanks!

I have heard of Nellie Bly. Sorry San Francisco was snubbed. The woman who stirred the Bay Area that January 1890 was a 55-year-old woman evangelist by the name of Maria B. Woodworth (later Woodworth-Etter).

While holding a revival in her 8,000-seat tent in Oakland, she and others predicted that a tidal wave and earthquake would destroy the Bay Area. Maybe you saw the big stories and line drawings while searching for Nellie Bly. In my biography of Maria ("Maria Woodworth-Etter, For Such a Time as This," 2004, Bridge-Logos) I devoted an entire chapter to the prediction, "Here Comes the Tidal Wave." I found lots of material as the Bay Area newspapers had almost daily reports of the prediction. The disaster was set for April 14, 1890 and an estimated thousand people fled the area for nearby hills.

What about Maria? She left with her team and set up her tent in St. Louis--far from the predicted tidal wave. She would preach until her death in 1924--at age 80--no doubt wanting to forget the meetings in Oakland in 1890.

I know, Nellie is my new heroine, and WAY ahead of her time. Or perhaps precisely right ON time. I just regret that - 'cause it never happened - there are no photos of her riding at the head of a Market Street parade! :)
