Hi My great great grandfather Champion Wetton came out to San Francisco in 1848 to, we believe build property. he lost everything in a fire and in subsequently in 1852 left to go to to Australia. The following is a copy of a communication found on a free masonry site. I'd love it if anyone could tell me more about him.

Dear Sir & Brother
Our Brother Champion Wetton who was initiated in this Lodge in Augt 1848, passed in October and raised in November in the same year & for whose certificate I paid you shortly afterwards. — This Certificate was burnt with all our brothers other effects at the Great Fire in San Francisco whither he had proceeded and he now wants another, being again about to proceed to South Australia.

Will you be good enough to let me have it in a day or two, and if there be any charge for it, I will remit the amount.

Yours sincerely,
Samuel Bidwell

An endorsement on the letter notes that a duplicate certificate was issued on the same day as the receipt of the letter, 17 April.

@ demetrios There's relief in the past, true - but also a whole lot that is suspiciously familiar about the way things work today!

I lived over on Sutter Street for a couple of years, and you're so right - the Argonaut is (as you describe it) an absolute treasure trove.

Richard,
Thanks again for the awesome stories and tidbits. Personally I find a lot of relief from today's economic troubles by losing myself in history and historical lessons. Recently I discovered the Argonaut Bookstore on Sutter, it is an amazing treasure trove of old san francisco fact and fiction.
