Richard:

I recall that the ruins of the mausoleum are along the right side of the first or second fairway. There's a map of the course at the Lincoln Park Golf Course site, along with this interesting discussion of the origins of the course: http://www.lincolnparkgc.com/Lincoln_Park/Lincoln_History.html

I'm not sure if the mausoleum is visible from the road. You might need to walk the course after the golfers leave.

@Jim: You're right, I'm not a golfer, and didn't know a thing about a mausoleum still standing there!

Do you happen to remember which hole it was near?

Richard:

Your podcasts are wonderful. I have my own shelf of San Francisco history books (ok, maybe two shelves), so your podcasts really fill in the blanks for me.

One note about Lands End. It's not exactly true that no trace remains of the old cemetery. You may not be a golfer, but I've seen the remains of an old mausoleum on the first fairway of the Lincoln Park golf course -- it's tucked into an old grove of trees, and really creeped me out when I first golfed there in the early 1990's. I'm just glad I didn't know that I was probably walking all over the bodies that remain under the course!

@demetrios: regarding the downtown curbstones featuring the letter "E" -- I'm not sure I know what you mean. Send me a photo, though, and I'll see what I can figure out!

@Martin: That's quite true, there is a physical resemblance between the two cities -- on the other hand, nobody knows for sure where that phrase came from or who said it first!

I actually <a href-"http://www.sparkletack.com/2007/11/26/sfist-san-francisco-the-paris-of-the-west/">wrote a short post about the whole "Paris of the West" business about a year and a half ago.

It's a great topic to speculate about ... I think the truth is that there are myriad possible sources, and throughout the last century different people have simply seen the "truth" of it in in their own individual ways.

The bottom line is that if it hadn't somehow felt right, the nickname never would have stuck.

@Andrea, this is only one of the many reasons that SF is considered Paris of the west. When you visit Paris and you go to those tiny streets you are going to see huge ressemblance to some of the SF hills.

Great Epi btw
Cheers

another awesome webi/epi sode... thanks again! it is really awesome to uncover these great tidbits about our great city. Quick question in walking around downtown I have been noticing the letter E engraved in the old stone curbs around the financial district... any idea what this is?

@Jack: Aargh, of course you're right, it was a copy of the 'Palais de Legion D'Honneur' -- as I stated myself in the Alma Spreckels podcast from a year ago.

My sincere apologies.

Call it a brain cramp -- or else it's just that all French architecture looks the same to me! ;)

Many thanks for your excellent commentaries. However, the 'Legion of Honor',according to other sources, was modeled on a 3/4 replica of the 'Palais de Legion D'Honneur', a ceremonial building in Paris, which had nothing to do with Versailles. It was originally re-fabricated for the PPIE in 1915, where Alma got the idea.

I really enjoyed this episode! I didn't knew the relationship between the "Legion of Honor" and Versailles (which I recently visited). Maybe this is one of the reasons why San Francisco is conisdered the Paris of the west...
