This article make me feel a bit nostalgic. To my great dismay it seems that baseball has lost the 'magic' in the last couple of decades or so. I wish it was like it was back in 1958 when it was all about the team and being a good role models for kids. Nowadays the players change teams all the time and charge outrageous sums for autographs. Imagine...what nerve!!!

I enjoyed your article very much though.

@Michael: I see you've been paying attention! :)

It's amazing how many ghosts of old ballparks are lurking in San Francisco - Seals Stadium was just the last one to go. I'll do a show about that one of these days!

Your October plan is a good one ... you'll catch the tail-end of San Francisco's actual summer, which (as we all know) doesn't really start until late August. Enjoy your visit!

@Tom: Now THAT'S the way to see a first ballgame - wow. I'll bet you can pull that whole day up in your mind in vivid, living color. You never forget your first trip to the ballpark, and I will always think fondly of Candlestick for that very reason.

Hey, what did Lefty think of the major leagues showing up and running the Seals out of town? He was retired, of course, but I have no doubt he had an opinion!

Richard,

I remember it well. I was fifteen years old when my dad said, "Let's go see Willie Mays". Our cousin Frank "Lefty" O'Doul got us into Seal's Stadium for my first "major league" game and I have been a San Francisco Giant's fan since April 15, 1958. Go Giant's & Beat LA!!

Great story about major league baseball coming to the west coast! Although I am not a big baseball fan, I did recently attend a Giants game, my first ever.

Next time I am visiting the City by the Bay, think I'll stop by the corner of 16th and Bryant and have a look at that plague
commemorating 50 years. While I'm there, I'll drop in the Double Play and have my favorite beverage, a bottle of Amber O'Douls.

My next stop will be Rincon Hill, followed by a walk through the old Barbary Coast. As I walk the streets, I'll be on the lookout for the mysterious letter "E" on the curb. When I go through the financial district I'll be looking for the cocktail route on Montgomery, Kearny and Market. And then out to the Palace of the legion of Honor in search of ghosts.

For the last six years, I have visited The City in the spring but this year I think I'll go in October. The weather seems to be more comfortable that time of year.
